The angling starts at Tørring, where the river is 2-4 meters wide. Before it flows into Mossø, it is typically up to 20 meters wide. The dominant fish species are brown trout and grayling, but lake trout, pike, perch, roach and gurnard also occur. At Vestbirk Hydropower there is a barrier that prevents passage, so there are fragile populations of trout and grayling. As a result, most anglers fish exclusively with catch & release for these species. Trout and steelhead fishing is typically dry fly fishing with light tackle and small imitation flies with May, June and July being the peak season. Pike and perch fishing is usually done with lures, spinners or wobblers. The very special fish knot is best fished in the dark with natural bait, such as earthworms. At the Vestbirk lakes there is regular lake fishing for pike and perch. Remember that pike is protected from March 15 to April 30 and the minimum size is 60 cm. Fishing permits can be obtained by joining an association or by purchasing a day pass, for example through www.fiskekort.dk or from some private landowners who post signs.
